History of Society
The MSCH was established in 1984 by Tan Sri Dr Mahadevan and Dato Khoo Kah Lin.
Tan Sri Mahadevan was already a world renowned clinical hypnotherapist. He had saved a patient’s life using clinical hypnosis in the UK and had been recognised by Dr John Hartland at Hammersmith hospital. He then worked with the father and son team Drs John and David Spiegel in the USA.

Tan Sri Mahadevan’s work placed Malaysia on the map for clinical hypnosis in the 1960s. Dr John Hartland visited Malaysia on several occasions and helped establish the MSCH in the steps of the British Medical and Dental Society for Clinical Hypnosis.
Dr Spiegel visited in the 1960s and 1970s and Dr. David Spiegel remains a strong supporter of the MSCH and the work that its members conduct in Malaysia and beyond.
In 1984, the Malaysian Society was established and opened its doors from to medical doctors and then clinical psychologists. In 1999, counsellors holding PHDs were admitted. In 2012, the society evaluated the curriculum offered by the LCCH and admitted Practitioner Diploma graduates as members to the society.
The MSCH has established the benchmark for practice and training standards for clinical hypnosis and in 2024 has opened its membership equally to medical, allied health care professionals and clinical hypnotherapists who hold a minimum of practitioner level training at level 5.
The society also has a growing international faculty and works closely with the British Society of Clinical Hypnosis, the Australian Society of Clinical Hypnotherapists and the Asia Pacific Society of Clinical Communication and Hypnosis.
